WORKING WITH CHILDREN

WORKING WITH CHILDREN

There has been an increase in requests to work with under 13’s due to many young people in this age taking more risks with their behaviour, especially with their sexual health. Working with young people in this age group is important to their development to empower them with basic skills and knowledge so they can make their own informed choices around their lives. Engaging with this age group will prepare them to deal with issues faced on when they become teenagers and moving up to secondary school. We have found that many young people comment that they think there is expectancy on how they should behave, look and act in society so by working with them could help to increase their confidence and self-esteem so they be true to themselves and not follow others.

Group work with children (8-12 years) will be delivered to targeted groups of young people who have been identified by an agency/ service and believe that group work will benefit the needs of the young people and help to have a positive impact on their lives. The group sessions will take place at the agency/ service premises; preferably somewhere the young people have been before and feel relaxed.

2-3 sessions are usually offered for approximately 1-3 hours depending on a number of different factors:

  • young people’s concentration
  • Hire of the room space
  • Limited time of the session
We can also provide a whole day instead of 2-3 sessions if this is more suited to when the group meet.

The sessions we deliver will be young person led meaning that the group will select the topics covered depending on their needs. We will provide fun, young person friendly activities and resources to pass on the important messages to the group.

We pride ourselves on our abilities to create a safe learning environment by utilising our vast range of communication skills. Our youth worker informal education approach and creating a group agreement to protect everyone we work with. This helps the young people to relax, enjoy their learning and get the best out of the education with positive outcomes.
